Can you imagine leaving your home after 43 years?
This week we went to a fare-well party for some friends in our village who are moving after 43 happy years. In this case a beautiful manor house dating back to the 1500's.
I wonder what you would miss about your home if you had to move......
Would it be the garden you had worked on over the years?......
That special view......
That quiet corner, perfect for getting away from it all......
Your kitchen perhaps......
The start of many a cup of tea......
Your drawing room? Only used on high days and holidays, but what a lovely room......
Or the snug where many a cozy evening by the fire have been spent......
For me, I'd miss the memory of the hundreds of family and friends that had passed through the doors.

So many things Liz...and we've only been here 6-years...home is simply home and full of so many wonderful memories...some sad too...wow...to have lived in one home for 43 years; that is special.

Wow 43 years! There would be much to miss...I am really hoping that this home will be in our lives for many years, but every time I state an absolute I am proved wrong! Beautiful post and lovely sentiment. Happy Monday Liz!
ReplyDeleteI can while a way many a happy hour dreaming of moving to a more rural home in Suffolk or Norfolk, but in reality I couldn't leave my little cottage that I've put so much love into. I would miss the location on a quiet little road and the fields to walk in.

Hi Liz - I think my first comments did not post. 43 years? That's amazing....such a long time. I would miss everything: the memories, neighbors, garden and simple routines around the house. But change can be exciting and good. Hope your friends' move goes well ~ xo, Loi
ReplyDeleteI'm with you-- I'd miss seeing the places that held the most memories. When I moved from a smaller, less conveniently-located house to the more convenient one I now occupy, I missed seeing the little bedroom where my daughter stayed when she came home from the hospital as a new-born, and the room where I first saw her walk, and the patio where I first held her in the sunlight. But the great thing about memories is, of course, that they are always with you. Best wishes to your friends!

That is such a long time to live in a home, quite unusual in many towns & cities these days, when people move more often it seems.
ReplyDeleteWe now own my in-laws home and they lived in that for 40 years...the intention is to sell it but my husband just cannot bring himself to...and actually I completely understand that, the emotional pull of a house is very strong.

We sold our beloved house in the US that had been my canvas for 8 years. I miss our garden, our neighbors, and the feel of the house - it was perfection. But I don't miss the uncomfortable winters and straw colored landscape. It's all a trade off - I wonder what your neighbors are looking forward to?
ReplyDeleteBeing a military spouse, we have a nomadic lifestyle. However, it's always difficult to move because of the friendships formed, etc. I can't imagine what it would be like to leave a home after living there for 43 years though. Must have been very heartbreaking... xx
ReplyDeleteThat's really given me something to think about.......Having put so much love, hard work and perseverance in to building our beloved home and garden from scratch (let alone the glamourous living in a mobile home whilst doing so!), I now can't bare the thought of ever leaving. Hope I am so old by then that I will be relieved and happy to live with happy memories, or else hopefully just leave in a box and not know anything about it......
